New reports indicate that Canon will launch the updated RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM lens with built-in zoom in 2024. This new lens may be called Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens.
Many Canon sports photographers have continued using older EF 70-200mm models with adapters, preferring their internal zoom design. Sources say the current RF 70-200mm is seen as unbalanced and inconsistent in feel, with cramped ring placement.
An internally zooming RF 70-200mm f/2.8L would provide desired handling for this key user base. It’s unclear whether this would be a marked “version II” or simply a new offering in the RF lineup. The original collapsible design remains popular for its portability.
While Canon shooters also await other unreleased lenses, insiders expect numerous new RF optics will be announced in the next six months. An internal zoom 70-200mm f/2.8L is likely one of them.
Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens Overview
The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens is a high-performance F2.8 telephoto zoom which offers exceptional image quality in a compact body, designed to work in all conditions. Despite the RF lens‘ reduced size and weight, it is optically at least as great as its predecessor. The Canon RF 70–200mm f2.8 L IS USM is a fantastic lens that is not only compact, but also delivers everywhere it counts for a photographer.
The price for RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens is $2,499.00, and available at B&H Photo Video / Amazon.
From a business perspective, the release of the new inner zoom 70-200mm F2.8 lens will probably help sell teleconverters a little more.
