Canon Patents: RF 24-70mm f/2.8 & RF 28-85mm f/2-2.8 Lenses

New Canon patents filed describing 24-70mm f/2.8 and RF 28-85mm f/2-2.8 Lenses for Canon RF-mount cameras.

The lenses in the examples are all for full frame mirrorless cameras, and you can see that IS is attached from the lens configuration diagram. The 24-70mm F2.8 is a standard standard zoom, but the 28-85mm F2-2.8 has specs that we rarely see.

The total length of 28-85mm F2-2.8 is 138.5mm excluding the flange back of the RF mount, so it seems that it fits in a practical size. This will be a lens more suitable for portraits than the standard zoom of Daisangen.

Here are several new Canon patents that have been surfaced online. Designed for the EOS R full frame mirrorless system these are some super telephoto lenses.

Canon has filed several new RF mount super-telephoto lens patents for the Canon full frame mirrorless cameras. I guess we already seen these “1200mm f/8“,  and “800mm f/5.6” lenses announced and hope to see the missing “1200mm f/11” in near future.

Canon Patent for RF 130mm f/2 Lens

Here is a new Canon patent describes an optical formula for a RF 130mm f/2 lens. Designed for the EOS R full frame mirrorless system this is a telephoto prime lens ideal for portrait photography.

As of writing it’s not clear if this will have the same macro features like the RF 100mm F2.8L Macro IS USM which is the world’s first AF macro optic.

Canon Patent for a Camera Mounted to a Drone

Canon has a patent for a camera mounted to a drone. The new Canon patent describes a formula for a small camera equipped with a gimbal system that is intended to be mounted on a drone:

  • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup apparatus capable of miniaturization.
  • In order to change the direction in which the image is taken, it is necessary to change the orientation of the drone body together with the gimbal, which causes inconvenience to the drone operator. Therefore, a camera that can greatly move the lens barrel in the pan direction and the tilt direction has been proposed. However, in the camera of Patent Document 2, the size of the camera cannot be reduced, and the degree of freedom of mounting on the handlebar of a drone or a bicycle may be reduced.
  • An object of the present invention is to provide a drive device, an electronic device, an image pickup device, and a mobile body that can be miniaturized.
  • In order to achieve the above object, the drive device of the present invention has a support portion that supports the driven body, a position detection unit that detects the rotation of the driven body, and the driven body that rotates about the pan axis. It is a drive device provided with a pan drive unit for making the pan.

A new Canon patent showcases RF mount telephoto prime lens. Canon patent application 2022-043436 (Japan) discusses optical formulas for a RF 100mm f/2 lens.

As of writing it’s not clear if this will have the same macro features like the RF 100mm F2.8L Macro IS USM  which is the world’s first AF macro optic.

Canon RF 80-240mm f/3.5 Lens Patent for RF-mount
